Gallows Humor

by Carolyn Elizabeth

Corey Curtis is coasting. At thirty-three, she’s in the best shape of her life and has a satisfying position at Jackson City Memorial Hospital. With a good paycheck, great friends, and occasional relationships with smart, beautiful women, she couldn’t be happier. She thinks.

Dr. Thayer Reynolds, whiling away some time before the start of her Emergency Department fellowship at JCMH and intrigued by the stories she’s heard, crashes the morgue to get a look at Corey—the woman her young colleagues are whispering about.

Totally spinning from her first interactions with Thayer, Corey throws herself into the post mortem exam of a construction worker who fell to his death, which isn’t at all suspicious—until it is. With no support from her boss or the police, Corey investigates the death on her own. Making bad decisions with good intentions, she recklessly endangers her own life and Thayer’s. Even worse—she potentially dooms any chance of a real relationship with Thayer before it even gets started.

FROM THE AUTHOR

"You’ve read it countless times before—two women make eye contact across a crowded room and the air between them crackles with mutual desire. Now imagine that room is a morgue—sexy, right?

In 2006 I was completing a Master of Science in biomedical anthropology and for fun assisting with autopsies at the hospital. While working in the forensic anthropology lab cleaning bones for a research project, I told my colleague I was going to write lesbian fiction about autopsies and skeletal analysis one day. I had never shared my dream to write with anyone.

I followed that degree up with a MS in pathology. I spent some time training at a busy downtown medical examiner’s office. I sometimes watched the evening news to get an idea what the next day was going be like.

One of the things that always struck me as fascinating—besides the fact that preforming an autopsy was something I enjoyed—was the contrast between the macabre scene of a dead body on a steel table with workaday life continuing on unchanged around it.

There were bright lights, clanging instruments and power saws. Sometimes there was music, casual conversation and laughter—not the solemnity you might expect. I wanted to capture that mood without trivializing tragedy, and create a compelling mystery.

Except, did I mention this is a love story between two women who meet in a morgue?

Over a decade after I spoke my intention to write death investigation stories out loud to the universe I present Gallows Humor, the first Corey Curtis and Thayer Reynolds romantic thriller."

Reviews

The Lesbian Review
At this very moment, my coffee cup is raised in Carolyn Elizabeth’s honor because she gave me the perfect blend of an angst-filled, budding romance with endless humor and an enthralling murder mystery that kept me up way past my bedtime. I still can’t get over the fact that this story is her debut novel because Carolyn Elizabeth has knocked my fluffy bedroom socks off with her flawless writing and the witty and entertaining dialogue between the characters along with the vivid descriptions of the Jackson City Memorial Hospital and environs.

If you’re looking for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you doubled over with laughter, then this is definitely the story for you!

goodreads
Lex Kent’s Reviews - I always enjoy reading good debuts. It gets me excited to find new authors. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. I think people will enjoy this read. I hope there is a book 2 because I will be reading it. Almost forgot, I also like the oddball title of the book.

    It’s a package deal.

I loved this laugh out loud, exciting, sexy, witty, fast-paced, too short (so glad there’s a sequel) entertaining story. Carolyn Elizabeth gives us a taste of a little bit of everything. A whodunit and medical romance but instead of your typical Dr. on Dr., you got a Dr. in the halls saving lives and in the basement, is Corey Curtis a literal Valkyrie who enjoys all rights and privileges pertaining thereto. She’s an Autopsy Services Coordinator, in a satisfying position, who, through the story, finds herself literally at bottom of her once perfect world. Her love interest, Dr. Thayer Reynolds, shows us what unconditional love looks like. She’s ever so patient, with the right balance of determination and self-preservation. The two characters are a perfect match for each other. I loved the dialogue, the banter was superb, top-notch writing. The side characters were equally fleshed out (see what I did there), supportive cheerleaders, a nice blend of kick-yo-ass-get-yo-shit-together and come-on-girl-you-can-do-it.

Can not wait for the sequel!

I was really in need of a great book to read, and thankfully I found Gallows Humor by Carolyn Elizabeth.
This story has it all. It is a murder mystery, a bit of action and adventure, a medical story, and most importantly for me, a beautiful workplace romance. The main characters, Corey and Thayer are easy to connect and fall in love with. The story itself has a good solid ending, but I am pleased to say that there is more waiting for Corey and Thayer. I can’t wait to read more from this world and these ladies. Gallows Humor has definitely been added to my favorites, and I believe it will be one of yours as well.
