Standom

by Maryn Scott

Singer-turned-actress Sara Silver is thrilled when producer Mika Williams offers her the role of a lesbian detective in a hot new series. And with in-demand actresses Christina Landis and Abby Farina onboard, the show is a sure to be a hit. But when Christina’s personal life gets in the way of her performance, and she exits the show in a wave of bury-your-gays backlash, Abby moves into the role as Sara’s love interest.

Totally fine. Except for that secret post-fundraiser kiss they haven’t talked about, and the fact Abby is supposedly straight.

FROM THE AUTHOR

"In January of 2020 I was playing on YouTube when one of their suggested videos sucked me in. It was a ten-minute compilation of Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris’s wedding. My heart soared. The way Ashlyn’s tears up when she first sees Ali? It’s everything. I became an instant stan. Yes, I can see now I was a little obsessive, but who doesn’t love a ten-year romance, complicated by fears of coming out and losing sponsorships?

Then I found an interview where the couple discussed their frustrations with the queer community’s need to out them. Every interaction between the women was analyzed on social media and added to the evidence of their queerness. Not surprisingly, our intense scrutiny made life challenging for the couple.

The idea for Standom came from my own, thankfully short-lived, obsession with Ali and Ashlynn. The novel isn’t about them. Or soccer. Or coming out per se. It’s about what happens when we love our icons but aren’t willing to let them write a narrative other than the one we want. I hope you’ll take a chance on Mika Williams, Sara Silver, and Abby Farina. Oh, and if you haven’t, check out that wedding video."

Silvia M. - There’s drama and there’s conspiracy and I absolutely loved reading it, would definitely recommend it.

Aria H. - I enjoyed reading this book, it was well written with an engaging, almost dual storyline and well-developed characters. The reason I said it feels like a double storyline is because you get the story featured in the blurb where a well-known actress starts appearing in a tv show playing a lesbian who grows close to her straight costar. The other storyline is behind the scenes and the ramifications of bringing this show to the public and what enfolds on social media. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. It was fast paced and gripping and I read it in one very short sitting.

Ashlee G. - I stayed up till 2am to finish this gem. It was the first book I’ve read by this author and I doubt it will be the last. Maryn Scott’s writing is very well done and her characters are very well developed. I found myself rooting for them throughout the book and was anxious to see that happily ever after. There is a depth to the story and characters that I wasn’t expecting based on the blurb and cover. The dialogue is witty and entertaining, Abby is hilarious and I loved hearing her banter with just about every other character in the book. Sara has a quiet grace about her and though she is the multi-talented star in this scenario, she is portrayed as a humble, kind human. Loved this and will likely be reading it again sooner than later because Abby was just that cute.

Rebecca T. - This book was hard to put down and it did a perfect job of managing the tension. At times I was angry right along with the characters and other times I was laughing at the dynamic between the different characters. Abby was easily my favorite character and her growth throughout the novel was really well done.

Angela K. - A new series is getting ready to launch with the two leading ladies that are lesbian on & off screen, and the writer is a lesbian. The two leads are Christina and Sara. What could be better? The only thing that could be better is that that one of the leading ladies, Christina, is still hooked on her ex and feels she is cheating on her when she has to kiss her co-star. What happens next sends shock waves throughout the entire set and threatens the series itself. A great read and I would highly recommend!

Jennifer S. - Standom is an enjoyable read and is the first book that I’ve read from Maryn Scott. The characters are well written and though there is romance and the happily ever after ending the book is so much more than a simple love story. Can’t wait to see where Scott takes these characters next. Looking forward to more from this author.
