Love by the Numbers

by Karin Kallmaker

As a behavioral scientist, Professor Nicole Hathaway’s work strips away the foolish mystique that surrounds the human mating dance. When her academic tome is treated as a viral “love manual” her ecstatic publisher books her to appear all over the U.S. and Europe. Worse yet, her quiet, managed life has been shattered by a series of incompetent assistants. And she’s certain this Lily Smith creature isn’t going to be any less a burden than the last assistant they sent her. Or the one before that. Or before that…

Lillian Linden-Smith needs this job. With a relentless TV lawyer and public mob still out for her blood for crimes committed by her “American royalty” parents, getting out of the country is her only hope for anonymity. If that means cleaning up and presenting an antisocial know-it-all Ph.D. for bookstores, clubs and lectures, fine. Dr. Hathaway may have succeeded in driving away all the others, but not this time.

From their first meeting the sparks fly, and each is thinking: She has no idea who she’s dealing with.

It’s hate at first sight in this love adventure from the author of Above Temptation, Roller Coaster and dozens of other best-selling, award-winning novels.

The Lesbian Reading Room
First class rom-com! A wonderful witty romance and a great tale of character development and growth... The romance is sweet and the sex is hot, all in all this had my dopamine, seratonin and oxytocin levels creeping higher and higher.

Lambda Literary Awards
Love by the Numbers — Finalist, Lesbian Romance.

Dear Author
...I like to see a couple fall in love outside of the bedroom as well as in it and it works for me. By the end of the story, Nicole and Lily have accepted themselves "“ in no small part due to the help and actions of the other "“ as much as they've accepted love in their lives and I can believe in their happy ever after.

Romance Novels for Feminists Blog
Info-geek that I am, I wish that Kallmaker had included a note citing her real-life sources for Nicole's research findings; I wanted to track down and read the actual studies... But if much of Love by the Numbers is more cerebral than emotional, its ending is filled with all the love declarations and love-proving gestures that fans of romance crave. I'm looking forward to reading some of Kallmaker's other work, and discovering if the balance between intellectual and emotional pleasures plays out in similar, or different, ways than it does in this Lambda-nominated title.

Lambda Literary Review
The love story is engaging and is filled with just the right amount of tension to make the nerve endings buzz as Nicole and Lily learn to adapt to the inevitable result of their growing passion for one another. The characters are appealing in spite of—or perhaps because of—the secrets each one holds, preventing them from opening their hearts. The story line is appealing and draws the reader in. It's also filled with that tongue-in-cheek, ever-so-sassy humor that Kallmaker does so well... Another win!

Queer Books Please, Episode 40
Romance is a suspense genre and Love by the Numbers proves why!

Frivolous Views
Engrossing, Romantic and Sexy... Kallmaker's writing is so vivid—she paints the picture so wonderfully it's as if I'm right there with the characters, seeing what they are seeing, smelling the same aromas, tasting the same food. It's wonderful! I've never been to the places Nicole and Lily visit, but that doesn't matter. They are brought to life so beautifully I feel as if I have a scrapbook of my own... Love by the Numbers is another of Kallmaker's books that has been added to my "re-read" pile.
